Caring for Country
For thousands of years, Australian Indigenous communities have practised deep environmental stewardship, guided by traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Caring for Country is a practical and engaging workshop that introduces students to Indigenous sustainability methods such as fire‑stick farming for bushfire prevention, understanding native bush tucker, and reading natural signs like predicting rain from the behaviour of the Cockatoo. Through hands‑on learning and cultural insight, students discover how caring for the land ensures its health for future generations.
Program Highlights:
- Exploration of Indigenous sustainability practices and environmental knowledge
- Introduction to fire‑stick farming and its role in bushfire management
- Learning about bush tucker and traditional ecological food systems
- Understanding environmental indicators such as bird behaviour and seasonal change
- Interactive activities that highlight the importance of environmental respect and stewardship
By understanding and respecting the land, students learn how to conserve the environment, protect wildlife and reduce their carbon footprint — essential actions for the well‑being of our planet and future generations.
