Cool Capoeira
Cool Capoeira introduces students to one of the world’s most unique blends of dance, music and martial arts. Originating from enslaved Africans in Brazil, Capoeira disguised combat movements within dance and rhythm. Today it is recognised as an important cultural tradition and is protected by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
In this workshop, students learn about the history and evolution of Capoeira and experience its rhythmic, acrobatic movements. The program features the Berimbau, an African instrument that provides the heartbeat of Capoeira’s dynamic energy. Participants explore how music, movement, agility and expression come together in this powerful art form.
Cool Capoeira welcomes everyone, whether they enjoy acrobatics, singing, drumming, dancing or martial arts. There is something in Capoeira for every learner.
Highlights include:
- Introduction to the origins and cultural significance of Capoeira
- Live demonstration of the Berimbau and rhythmic music
- Learning basic Capoeira movements and acrobatic techniques
- Exploration of Capoeira’s protected status as UNESCO heritage
- Inclusive activities suited to all abilities and interests
As Capoeira master Mestre Canjiquinha said, “Capoeira does not have creed, colour or flag. It belongs to the people and travels the world.”
