World Religion Day
Date: Third Sunday of January
What is World Religion Day?
World Religion Day is observed on the third Sunday of January and was established in 1950 to promote understanding, peace and cooperation among people of all faiths. Originating from Baha’i principles, the day encourages communities to recognise the shared values across the world’s religions and to strengthen dialogue, respect and unity.
Over time, World Religion Day has become an opportunity for individuals, schools and organisations to explore global belief systems, celebrate diversity, and foster conversations that build bridges between cultures, traditions and communities.
The Purpose of World Religion Day
World Religion Day aims to:
Encourage interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding
Promote the idea that the world’s religions share common principles such as compassion, peace, generosity and justice
Highlight the richness and diversity of global belief systems
Reduce prejudice by raising awareness of different cultural and spiritual traditions
Inspire communities to work together for peace and social harmony
At its heart, the day is about recognising the humanity we share regardless of faith or background.
