From Zimbabwe to Queensland – Mbira, Rhythm and Culture
Limited Queensland Tour | 9–30 March 2027
Travelling from Zimbabwe to Queensland for a limited three-week tour, Zimbabwean musician and educator Leo brings the music and cultural traditions of his home country directly into Australian classrooms.
Leo shares his knowledge of Zimbabwean music through live performance, storytelling, rhythm and interactive demonstrations. Drawing on his own cultural background and musical experience, he introduces students to traditional Zimbabwean instruments, including the marimba and mbira, exploring how they are played, the sounds they create and their place within Zimbabwean culture.
Students will discover the important role music plays in bringing people together, passing on traditions and expressing culture and community. Through an engaging combination of music, cultural learning and participation, Leo encourages students to listen, respond and experience Zimbabwean rhythms for themselves.
More than a musical performance, the program provides students with the opportunity to meet and learn directly from a visiting Zimbabwean presenter, ask questions and develop a greater understanding of Zimbabwe and its cultural traditions.
Bring Student Voices from Zimbabwe into Your Harmony Week Celebrations
A special cultural exchange opportunity alongside Leo’s Queensland tour
Imagine your students creating music alongside young people from Zimbabwe, sharing their experiences and learning from one another first-hand.
Alongside Leo’s Queensland tour in March 2027, 15 students from Eland Oak School in Zimbabwe are planning an eight-day educational visit in Queensland. This proposed exchange offers Queensland schools a rare opportunity to build on Leo’s music program through meaningful, student-to-student cultural connections.
Your school could work with the visiting group to develop shared activities, such as:
- Make music together: share rhythms, songs and musical ideas.
- Connect across cultures: exchange stories about school life, traditions and interests.
- Create something together: develop a joint musical activity or classroom project.
For schools booking Leo’s program, the exchange could offer an exciting next step, bringing Harmony Week’s message of belonging to life through personal connections and shared cultural experiences.
Cultural Infusion can facilitate an introduction at no cost and suggest ways to collaborate. Activities and practical arrangements would then be developed and agreed directly between the schools.
The visit remains proposed, but expressions of interest from Queensland schools will help inform planning and the possibility of bringing this special opportunity to life. Participation during Harmony Week will depend on the group’s confirmed travel dates and arrangements.
