Mbira of Zimbabwe

Discover the captivating sounds of the Mbira, often called the “thumb piano,” an ancient African instrument played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe for over a thousand years. Its shimmering, melodic tones carry stories, traditions and spiritual meaning that connect generations.

In Mbira of Zimbabwe, George Joe introduces students to the origins and cultural history of the Mbira before performing traditional Shona songs. Students are invited to participate by adding percussion, singing and rhythmic patterns that bring the music to life.

Highlights include:

  • Introduction to the history and cultural significance of the Mbira
  • Live performance of traditional Shona songs
  • Singing in the Shona language
  • Hands‑on participation with percussion and group singing
