Riding the Waves

In Riding the Waves, Venezuelan engineer Ramileth introduces students to the science behind modern telecommunications through engaging experiments with sound waves, light waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. This hands‑on program helps students understand how everyday technologies such as mobile phones actually work, breaking down complex scientific ideas into clear, accessible demonstrations.

Students also gain insight into what a career in engineering involves, exploring how curiosity, problem‑solving and innovation drive the technologies we rely on. Riding the Waves is part of a Science Communicator program created to highlight how culture influences scientific progress, presented in partnership with the Royal Society of Victoria.

Highlights include:

  • Experiments with sound waves, light waves and the electromagnetic spectrum
  • Clear explanations of how mobile phones and modern communications work
  • Insight into engineering as a career
  • Interactive demonstrations led by a Venezuelan engineer
  • Connections between culture, science and human progress

Riding the Waves offers students an exciting and accessible introduction to the science behind the technology they use every day.
